Pure island fantasyOne of the most extraordinary luxury retreats in the world
Destination: Necker Island, British Virgin Islands
Vacation: Private island
Seeking: Secluded luxury
Highlight: Mesmerising views
Necker island is owned by British billionaire, entrepreneur, and founder of the Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson. Because you would, if you could.
Part of Virgin’s Limited Edition property portfolio Necker Island is barely believable. Just look at it. Turquoise waters, tick. Pristine white sand beaches, tick. Remote, almost secret location, like it’s risen from the depths of a pirate fantasy, tick. Lodgings straight out of a Bond film with impressive names like The Great House (with 11 guest rooms no less), massive tick.
And incredibly, you can stay here. Or book the whole island. As you wish.
You can get to Necker Island via Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, the main airport serving the British Virgin Islands, on Beef Island. And, at the time of writing this article, you can fly into Beef Island via some of the more frequently visited Caribbean islands like Puerto Rico, Antigua and St. Thomas. You can get to Beef Island by private jet or boat, and if you want to fly straight to Necker Island you can also arrive by helicopter because, of course, Necker Island has a helipad.

1. Tailored dining
Dining can be formal or informal, inside or out, themed or traditional or a mixture of everything – think relaxed lunches on Turtle Beach to romantic dinners on the Great House roof terrace. Necker Island chefs create mouthwatering menus, using fresh and local ingredients wherever possible, whilst adding a touch of the Caribbean to your plate.
2. Floating sushi
Don’t miss Necker’s famous floating sushi bar in the beach pool.
Sleeping up to 48 guests across 24 rooms, accommodation on Necker Island includes bedrooms in the Great House and individual Bali Houses dotted around the island.
All guest rooms boast incredible panoramic ocean views and tropical outlooks, and while no two rooms are the same, they all offer complete privacy, a spacious terrace and some even have their very own plunge pool.
The island can be hired exclusively for groups of up to 48 people, or if you’re not looking to hire it exclusively you can still enjoy the Necker experience by taking a room as a couple, individual or family during selected weeks throughout the year called ‘Celebration Weeks’.
As well as breathtaking and secluded natural beauty and an abundance of wildlife, including flamingos, lemurs, and giant tortoises, you’ll also find freshwater infinity pools and hot tubs, two floodlit tennis courts and a resident pro, plenty of watersports, a fully equipped gym, snooker, chess, and lots of places to sit back and relax.
There are two main white sandy beautiful beaches. Main Beach, where water activities are based, and Turtle Beach, a more peaceful beach with hammocks.
Necker Island boasts the beautiful Samudra Spa treatment rooms, combining carefully curated treatments with a peaceful beachside setting. The resort offers Aromatherapy Associates skincare range which is exclusive to the island in the Caribbean.

It’s hard to describe the first impressions of Calabash Cove Resort & Spa in a way that will do the first few steps, and that view, justice, but the closest thing we can liken it to is taking a slow, deep breath and then feeling your whole body begin to relax as you exhale.
Looking down at Marigot Bay from the meandering island road in the St Lucian hills above as we approached the resort, with its sparkling waters and dramatic rainforest backdrop, was a spectacular way to get reaquainted.
It really says something that the design of The Lone Star Hotel & Restaurant is so impressive that your gaze is torn between its sleek white structure, and the mesmeric beach it’s nestled on.
