Welcoming, relaxing, beautiful resort right on Grand Anse beach

Destination: Grenada, Caribbean
Vacation: Relaxing beach getaway
Seeking: Comfort, calm and indulgence
Highlight: Prime location on Grand Anse beach

There’s a special aura to Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada. It struck us as soon as we arrived. The interior design is beautiful; white fans and woven wooden lampshades dotted overhead, lush green tropical vines spiralling across the ceiling, over pristine white archways, and the bright green leaves of potted plants reaching up between the white and tan-coloured furniture. But it was the sense of calm, homeliness and assured comfort that was most enchanting.

Everyone we met was super friendly and excited to share with us the different elements of the resort they clearly loved. From the carefully curated suites to the relaxing dining areas and the hotel’s prime position on Grenada’s most iconic beach, Grand Anse.

Best food & drink

1. Oliver Restaurant

Situated near the sea, the Oliver Restaurant is an upscale restaurant with Caribbean-meets-Creole flavour dishes. Each dish is prepared with local produce and spices, including vegetarian selections, for a true taste of the island, as calypso and reggae bands play into the night.

2. Sea and Surf Terrace & Bar

Sea and Surf is a breezy open and incredibly relaxing place to dine with views of the white sands of Grand Anse beach. We recommend a slow lunch of rotis with curried chickpeas, kuchela, mango chutney and sides of fries with cold Caribs to drink and frozen yoghurt and coconut sorbet for dessert. Paradise.

3. Dodgy Dock

A short taxi ride away is Dodgy Dock, one of the island’s most popular bars and restaurants. Highly recommend going on Wednesday Street Food Night, the liveliest night of the week with local food vendors and live music. We tried the national dish, Oil Down – a tasty stew with breadfruit, salted meat, vegetables and dumplings simmered in coconut milk and spices, along with some seafood skewers with prawns and fresh fish, chicken rotis, jerk chicken, flame-grilled corn, and sautéed vegetables. All of which was delicious. Had we not been so full we’d have tried everything as it all looked, and smelled, amazing. After dinner, and a few rum punches, we spent the rest of a very fun evening on the dance floor.

Stay

With 64 villa-style suites at Spice Island Resort there are plenty of options for where to stay whether you’re looking for something steps from the beach or a private pool sanctuary among the tropical gardens. We especially liked the Luxury Almond Pool Suites. The style is a mix of grandeur – think four poster beds, wooden ceiling fans, decorative sofas and lounging chairs – with contemporary touches and modern amenities like Nespresso machines and Molten Brown products. Each suite feels like its own private villa, and a lot of care has gone into making them feel homely and comfortable.

Explore

With a secluded prime position on the white sands of Grand Anse beach slow living and enjoying the unbelievable views on your doorstep is the number one activity here. But there’s plenty to explore further afield too. Grenada is a special mix of tropical rainforest interior and spectacular coastline with some of the best beaches we’ve ever seen.

The most enjoyable trips we did were to Dodgy Dock for Wednesday Street Food night, a visit to BBC beach, also known as Mourne Rouge Beach, and lunch – Mediterranean chicken wraps, crispy fries, rum punches and affogato for dessert – at Brisa Mar restaurant and bar with views directly overlooking the bay. Absolutely stunning.

Relax

The pool area is pretty and tranquil, with four poster day beds and white loungers surrounding the water. The tropical gardens are immaculately looked after and strolling the walkways between the different plants and trees is a calming experience, adding to the secluded retreat feel of the resort.

The award-winning Janissa Spa is another oasis on property, complete with open-air rain showers, a cascading water wall, cedar sauna and four air-conditioned treatment rooms. A beautiful, unhurried, wonderful place to unwind.

Silversands Grand Anse was a resort we’d wanted to visit for what seemed like forever. It has the longest infinity pool in the Caribbean, the architecture is chic, minimalist, eye-catching and most appealing the hotel’s located right on the shores of Grand Anse, one of the most beautiful beaches in Grenada.
