Relaxing, boutique retreat overlooking Bonaire Bay

Destination: St Lucia, Caribbean
Vacation: Boutique hideaway
Seeking: Tranquility & tropical nature
Highlight: Spectacular panoramic views

It’s hard to describe the first impressions of Calabash Cove Resort & Spa in a way that will do the first few steps, and that view, justice, but the closest thing we can liken it to is taking a slow, deep breath and then feeling your whole body begin to relax as you exhale.

The gleaming lobby leads straight to the unique and beautiful Windsong Restaurant, the main restaurant at Calabash Cove. It’s a breathtaking moment when you move further inside and the unobstructed panoramic view of the wonderfully tropical Bonaire Bay below and the shimmering Caribbean Sea beyond fully reveals itself. A great spot any time of the day, but especially at sunset.

The resort is woven into the hillside with new jaw-dropping angles and delights coming into the spotlight as you make your way down towards the shore.

The designer forty-foot infinity pool is stunning; the accommodation, which feels nicely spread across the property, includes Balinese mahogany Water’s Edge Cottages, Swim-Up Jr. Suites, and Sunset Ocean View Jr. Suites. With just 26 rooms in total Calabash Cove is an intimate boutique place to stay. As well as having those wow-factor views there’s also an air of tranquillity and calm that can be felt throughout the resort; it really is the place to be to completely escape it all.

At the bottom of the hill is a secluded, beautiful palm-fringed sandy beach with a wooden pier.

“Set deep among coconut trees, bougainvillea, heliconia and other vibrant exotic flowers, Calabash Cove is the place of dreams. Watch the hummingbirds effortlessly flutter about from the privacy of your very own balcony, take in the sunset with a delicious cocktail in hand while relaxing in our infinity pool or indulge in a decadent spa treatment for two at the Ti Spa.”

Best food & drink

1. Windsong Restaurant

Dining at the Windsong Restaurant is a unique experience and there aren’t many restaurants anywhere in the world that can boast a view quite as eye-catching. The food is a mix of international and local, with much of the menu inspired by Asian cuisine. We really enjoyed the chicken curried Saint Lucian roti with mango chutney and salad and the homemade banana pudding with rum and raisin ice cream.

2. C-Bar

At one end of the elegant Windsong Restaurant you’ll find C-Bar, positioned perfectly to offer new angles on the spectacular scenery, a view of the stunning infinity pool directly below and the Caribbean sea beyond. It’s the perfect place for a cocktail or a cold local Piton beer while you take in the sunset.

3. Swim-Up Pool Bar

The infinity pool at Calabash Cove is one of our absolute favourites. As beautiful as the view the 40ft designer pool is incredibly relaxing to float around in. And thanks to the Swim-Up Pool Bar you don’t need to leave in order to get some refreshment. You can order a variety of food and light bites including calamari or a burger, and there’s a great selection of cocktails, many with a Caribbean and St Lucian theme.

Stay

Our accommodation was a Balinese mahogany Water’s Edge Cottage with a great sized outdoor plunge pool, and wonderful views of the beach and the sea.

The cottage had a bedroom with a jacuzzi tub in one corner, bathroom, living room and little decking area with sunloungers, plus a brightly coloured hammock suspended outside and an outdoor rain shower. Surrounded by lush tropical plants, trees and flowers, the cottage was secluded and peaceful. It was also in a great spot just a few steps away from the beach.

Pitons St Lucia

Explore

Calabash Cove is the perfect sanctuary to have as a peaceful base in St Lucia from which you can explore and venture out on a few adventures. There’s so much to see and do on the island; some of our favourites and must-sees include The Pitons, two breathtaking volcanic spires on a UNESCO world heritage site, chocolate making at Hotel Chocolat’s Rabot Estate and the iconic Marigot Bay, arguably the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean.

After every excursion return to base and make a start on your next book on your balcony, by the pool, at the bar – there are so many incredible viewpoints and places to ‘do nothing’ within the Calabash resort, it’s an amazing place to simply unwind.

Relax

The Ti Spa at Calabash Cove offers spa treatments in a cosy, intimate spa of natural wood and calming colours.

Treatments combine European techniques with Saint Lucia’s storied tradition of using plant- and food-based curatives. Guests always have a choice in the preferred location of their massage. Whether on the boardwalk, the gazebo or the privacy of their room patio or cottage living room.

There’s a real feeling of freedom and serenity throughout Calabash Cove. Made to feel at home within minutes of walking into the property we were immediately encouraged to relax and enjoy, in any way we wanted. A great hotel for laid-back luxury and a beautiful Caribbean escape.

Looking down at Marigot Bay from the meandering island road in the St Lucian hills above as we approached the resort, with its sparkling waters and dramatic rainforest backdrop, was a spectacular way to get reaquainted.
