Weather Permitting has debuted on the 40th-floor terrace of Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero, placing sunset drinks high above the Financial District.
The seasonal pop-up is open Friday through Sunday from 3pm until sundown, with handcrafted cocktails prepared by the hotel’s lead bartenders. Premium wines are also available, alongside zero-proof options for alcohol-free evenings.
The open-air terrace looks towards the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, Alcatraz and San Francisco Bay. Its afternoon opening time allows guests to watch the skyline change through golden hour before the bar closes at sunset.
Four Seasons announced the pop-up on September 11, although it has not provided a closing date for the seasonal experience. Visitors should also note that “until sundown” means closing time will shift as daylight hours change.

Seasonal cocktails above San Francisco
Weather Permitting is designed as a relaxed outdoor bar rather than a formal rooftop restaurant. The drinks programme focuses on cocktails influenced by seasonal flavours, with recipes developed across the hotel’s team of lead bartenders.
No individual cocktails or prices were included in the opening announcement. The announcement focuses on the terrace, its panoramic setting and the changing light across the city and Bay.
“Weather Permitting is about celebrating San Francisco at its most beautiful,” Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero general manager Janet Wruck said. She described the pop-up as an open-air experience bringing together drinks and “one of the most stunning vantage points in the city.”
The bar is intended for after-work drinks and weekend occasions, while the open-air layout makes it suited to couples or small groups looking for an alternative to a traditional indoor cocktail lounge. The name reflects the city’s changeable weather, where sunshine, fog and cooling winds can reshape an afternoon quickly.
Inside the 40th-floor terrace
Located above downtown San Francisco, the hotel’s outdoor terrace spans 1,600 square feet, or just under 149 square metres. It is divided into north and south sections, opening different perspectives across the skyline and waterfront.
Four Seasons lists a maximum capacity of 80 people when the terrace is arranged for a reception. That figure relates to its event configuration and does not necessarily indicate the number of places available during regular bar service.
The space has previously operated as The Overlook, an outdoor bar and hotel amenity where sparkling wine was served when the weather allowed. In 2022, it reopened after a two-and-a-half-year renovation of the hotel.
At that time, access to The Overlook was described as exclusive to overnight guests. The new Weather Permitting announcement does not say whether the pop-up remains guest-only, so non-residents should contact the hotel before visiting.
The terrace can also be used for private occasions, with the hotel’s events team available to arrange gatherings. Its two outdoor areas and elevated views provide a San Francisco setting for private receptions in the centre of the city.
A sky-high hotel in the Financial District
Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero occupies the upper 11 floors of the 48-storey 345 California Center. The 155-room property combines a central Financial District location with far-reaching views from its rooms, suites and shared spaces.
Sky Bridges connect the building’s two towers across floors 40 to 48. Floor-to-ceiling windows along these walkways frame landmarks including the Transamerica Pyramid and Salesforce Tower, while some rooms look towards Alcatraz or the Golden Gate Bridge.
In 2022, the renovation encompassed the lobby and fitness centre, along with 127 guestrooms and 28 suites. Inside, neutral colours set off mid-century modern furniture, bespoke fabrics and hand-tufted wool rugs. Gold detailing woven into the wall coverings reflects the city’s Gold Rush history while avoiding an overtly themed appearance in the rooms.
Two Private Terrace Suites offer another way to experience the skyline outdoors. The Golden Gate Terrace Suite and Embarcadero Terrace Suite each include an 800-square-foot private terrace, paired with indoor living space for a more secluded stay above the city.
Weather Permitting adds a sociable outdoor option to the hotel’s existing dining programme. Orafo, the property’s Italian-inspired restaurant, serves dishes shaped by ingredients from local markets, while in-room dining is available around the clock.
Turning sunset drinks into a San Francisco stay
Guests who want to stay overnight can use the hotel’s Experience More Offer, which includes a USD 100 hotel credit with each guest-room stay. Suite bookings receive USD 250 per stay.
The credit can be applied to drinks at Weather Permitting or dining at Orafo, as well as other eligible experiences at the hotel. Four Seasons has not listed minimum-stay conditions, booking deadlines or blackout dates in the pop-up announcement, so travellers should confirm the full terms when reserving.
An overnight stay also makes it easier to explore the Embarcadero before heading up for drinks. The Ferry Building, a waterfront landmark dating from 1898, is approximately a 10-minute walk from the hotel and contains food traders selling local produce, cheese, wine and prepared dishes.
Its farmers market operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, making Saturday a convenient option for combining a morning at the market with afternoon cocktails. From the waterfront, ferries also depart for Alcatraz, Sausalito, Alameda and Oakland.
Chinatown, Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach are within reach from the hotel, while nearby California Street cable cars offer a route across the city’s hills. SFMOMA, Oracle Park and Chase Center extend the options for guests building a wider weekend around their stay.
