Nestled in nature, minutes from the beaches of Versilia, the best of both worlds

Destination: Tenuta Zamparina, Tuscany
Vacation: A luxurious resort, surrounded by nature
Seeking: Wellness, good food and Italian sunshine
Highlight: The breathtaking views

Just a short drive from the iconic Tuscan resort of Forte Dei Marmi, overlooking the Versilian Sea; you will find the resort of Tenuta Zamparina, nestled in the lush green hills with views as far as the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

Legend has it that when Venus was born from the waves, seven precious stones fell from her tiara, creating seven islands off the Tuscan coast, further inland Barbara the resort’s owner, has created her own precious oasis that blends perfectly with nature via six unique suites.

Every part of the resort is carefully considered; a stylish mix of vintage and modern, that compliments the incredible view with a strong natural theme. Floor to ceiling windows flood light through the buildings, dappled by the trees that surround them and the sparkling reflection of the pool that invites you to sit with your toes in the water on a balmy evening and watch the sun set.

Tenuta Zamparina is situated in Montignoso, a town in the province of Massa-Carrara, and the iconic marble of Carrara is a feature in every room.

Perfectly situated a stones throw from Versilia, the resort is roughly halfway between Florence and Portofino. Its vantage point makes it the perfect base to explore the nearby Gulf of Poets and Cinque Terre, there’s an option to skipper a boat; this I promise is THE best option too, the emerald green waters are best travelled at a relaxed pace, taking in the scenery; from the multicoloured houses that cling to the rugged coastline to the beautiful beaches punctuated with striped parasols that could easily be a screenshot from a postcard.

Forte dei Marmi is one of the most famous destinations in Versilia, thanks to crystal clear waters, fine sand and a beach that seems to go on for miles. The exclusive boutiques and gourmet restaurants that offer an atmosphere of exclusivity and refinement, in the summer there is a twice weekly market; this is an incredible slice of Italy at its best.

Nonnas check the quality of linen table cloths, whilst the Milanese weekenders stock up on their much-loved cashmere and much more, this is very much a ‘made in Italy’ showcase.

If the beach and shopping isn’t calling you, why not follow the Apuan Alps’ trails by ebike to enjoy breathtaking views and the opportunity to totally immerse yourself in nature as you travel through vineyards and olive groves via forgotten paths. If you love history, architecture and art, you can visit the historic cities of Lucca, Florence and Siena, each one different, but each unique skyline is breathtaking in its own way, and enjoy the picturesque hilly landscapes covered with vineyards and olive groves such as those of Bolghieri and Val d’Orcia, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

Best food & drink

1. Zamparina

The ingredients of Zamparina’s dishes come directly from the surrounding nature and from local farmers. With a focus on zero mile organic suppliers, you know immediately that you’ll be eating the best Mediterranean ingredients from breakfast to dinner and everything in between.

There’s special evenings and wine and cheese tastings; imagine watching the sun go down over Versilia and the sea beyond with a glass of wine after a beautiful day in this lush haven.

When you wake up you are greeted by a rich buffet, everything is made in house; pastries and focaccia baked that morning, teamed with fruits and cured meats, with fresh coffee naturally. Lunch and dinner are as bespoke as you would like them, with the focus on the immediate area, there is the option of a true Tuscan lunch. Dinner is an opportunity to taste the incredible wines available at Zamparina, with local vineyards providing impeccable pairings for your meal in the dining room or on the terrace, and there’s the opportunity to request your private dinner with an exclusive chef which is highly recommended.

2. Al Bocconcino

Located in the heart of Forte Dei Marmi, it’s no coincidence that the “Al Bocconcino” pizza restaurant has been one of the simplest but also most requested restaurants in the town for almost 40 years.
From post market lunches to summer evenings in the square, its pizza and pasta dishes appeal to both locals and tourists alike.

The prices also do not reflect its location, surrounded by the likes of Gucci and Prada, they always remain fair here, we have visited many times over the years and it’s never changed from doing simple dishes well.

The large portions and fresh ingredients mean that sometimes there’s a wait for a table in high summer, but it’s totally worth it.

3. Spiaga Alpemare

Translated as the ‘beach and the pine forest’
I had to include this, this is THE ultimate beach club.

At the entrance to Alpemare you are welcomed by a wonderful pine forest, you are immediately immersed in the scents and greenery of this incredible place. As you make your way to the beach.

As if this wasn’t beautiful enough, there’s no umbrellas, but 48 splendid tents, each of which equipped with a safe, USB connections and courtesy kit whilst still creating the most aesthetic backdrop.

From breakfast to Aperitivo, this is not your classical beach club, Chef Mirko Caldino creates the most beautiful dishes inspired by the nature around him. And as for the music, well; considering the owner is no other that Andrea Bocelli you can imagine how atmospheric this whole visit could be.

Relax

Wellness is a big part of Tenuta Zamperina too, your eyes are immediately drawn to the incredible infinity pool; placed between the sky and hills, you can enjoy a breathtaking view while taking a swim or relaxing on one of the oversized sunbeds, aesthetically the exterior is just as stylish as the interior.

The abundance of local marble is the perfect contrast to the lush greenery, the warm stone against the cool shade the trees provide; with the occasional almost life-sized “giraffe” holding a chandelier.

“A place where time stands still and the beauty of the evening sunset creates an envious postcard”.

The Wild was our final stop on our honeymoon trip to the Cyclades, and we saved the best for last. The location is breathtaking – set within a natural ampitheatre on a cliffside. As we stepped out of the lobby and peered over the tumbling cliffs at Kalafatis Beach below, it was a real pinch-me moment.
