A hidden gem in London’s trendiest postcode

Destination: Notting Hill, London
Vacation: luxury London boutique hotel
Seeking: art, celebs, unpretentious luxury
Highlight: feeling so settled, it feels more like home than hotel

This is my third time at beautiful townhouse hotel The Laslett and I know it won’t be my last. Tucked along a row of classic white Victorian townhouses just behind the buzz of Notting Hill Gate, this boutique property feels like an exquisitely curated London residence (the kind you dream about watching on Grand Designs).

From the moment you arrive, there is a sense of calm confidence about the place: understated, welcoming and deeply rooted in its neighbourhood. Even the hotel’s scent is intoxicating.

The hotel is named after Rhuane Laslett, an English community activist and the principal organiser of the Notting Hill Fayre or Festival, that evolved into what we now call Notting Hill Carnival. This isn’t a generic luxury hotel that could be anywhere in the world. It’s deep rooted and stands proud in West London. With interiors I would describe as contemporary British design, the hotel is set across five restored townhouses with lots of the original features still sitting comfortably alongside local artwork and thoughtful design details. Nothing feels overdone or try-hard. Instead, it feels collected, layered and inviting rather than intimidating. Stepping through reception is like coming home every single time.

Best food & drink

1. The Henderson Bar & Kitchen

Within the hotel is The Henderson Bar & Kitchen which is open all day. They have got all bases covered with breakfast, lunch, dinner or just picky bits with your chosen cocktails. The all-day dining concept here sees guests and visitors enjoy the space across the ground floor of the hotel and spills out to the outdoor terrace which is another highlight of the property, especially during the summer months. You can choose a cocktail from the specially curated menu, it’s more timeless than trending which I prefer. As a champagne girly, I tried the Laslett Champagne cocktail combined with Elderflower liqueur and a sugar cube. Wines are also available to accompany any mood and for coffee lovers, there is a whole host of variations on offer all day long.

Breakfast showcases a great selection of foodie favourites and some really healthy options which ties in perfectly with the wellness offering now available at the hotel. Green juices are a hit here and I washed mine down with a hearty salmon bagel and bowl of porridge.

Room service is available from The Henderson’s menu until around 11pm so if you wish to enjoy the room longer, you can use this as your reason to not move and have your treats delivered (as well as raiding the stocked mini bar).

Stay

There are 51 rooms spread across the townhouses and while they vary in size and configuration, they all share a consistent aesthetic that feels as carefully curated as your favourite corner of a well-loved home.

Spare Rooms: Ideal for solo travellers or those after a stylish city base without fuss, the Spare Room Singles and Doubles are an ideal choice. With generous natural light, these rooms pack a surprising amount of personality into a smaller footprint. Every inch feels purposeful and with high ceilings, tall sash windows and bespoke furniture pieces. Despite their size, they still include signature touches like the hotel’s much-loved big bar which is a generous in-room minibar that’s stocked with craft beers, spirits and local treats that fit the playful, curated vibe of Notting Hil but keeping up with The Laslett’s vibe.

Master Bedroom Doubles: Step up to the Master Bedroom Doubles and you will notice the extra breathing room. These rooms balance comfort and style beautifully. This room type features super king beds dressed in luxury linens, space for a small desk or seating area and elegant metro-tiled bathrooms. Decorated with thoughtful art pieces that bring personality to the space it’s the type of room that feels as comfortable for a work trip as it does for a weekend escape – light, stylish and unfussy.

Master Bedroom Suites: At the top end are the Master Bedroom Suites – my personal favourite when I stayed. These rooms feel more like a stylish London pied-à-terre than a hotel room. With roomy layouts, dedicated lounging or dining areas and in some cases a daybed that adds another layer of comfort. Each features gorgeous artwork and vintage curiosities sourced from local galleries giving each suite its own personality rather than feeling like a clone of the next. Stay fresh and primed using the beautiful bathrooms with either a bath plus shower or a walk-in rain shower. Modern conveniences at your fingertips like Nespresso machines, high-speed Wi-Fi plus thoughtful “homey” touches created by stacks of Penguin classics, bespoke lighting and furniture from British designers like Russell Pinch and Nocturne Workshop.

Whichever room type you choose, there is something to suite everyone and their non-negotiables for a hotel stay.

Explore

Being right in the heart of Notting Hill, there is a lot to uncover.

Staying at the Laslett, you feel like you really are part of the neighbourhood. Café culture is HUGE in this part of London with some of the most popular spots in London right on the hotel’s doorstep. You can easily walk to Holland Park to stroll around the beautiful Kyoto Garden and then meander back slowly via Portobello Road Market. Westbourne Grove is close by and also showcases independent traders, art, antique shops and food. If you’re wanting to go more into central London, the tube is minutes away. Notting Hill is on the Central, Circle and District lines along with an assortment of buses to jump on and off if something with windows is more your style.

And of course, during summer, it’s carnival season and The Laslett is always open during, playing its part to still host guests and carnival visitors over the 2-day celebration and for the season.

Relax

Even though the hotel is in a busy area of London, the neighbourhood feels keep it calm and somewhat serene and the hotel has its own wellness room. A selection of treatments which help to reset and relax are on offer. On the lower ground of the hotel, this hidden retreat has treatments focusing on restoring balance be it, skin, hair, mind or body.

The wellness menu lets you choose a very luxurious Oskia or Mesojet facial or massages including 30 mins of bliss option. After your treatment, you can book another one (there are no limits as it’s ever so easy to book in at reception) and then head to your room to chill out and soak up the calming atmosphere in the robes and slippers provided.
