An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Cotswolds is known for its honey-hued stone, sleepy villages, incredible pubs and the best farm shops.

I’ve been lucky enough to spend many foodie breaks here – never missing a trip to the bountiful Daylesford Organic Farm Shop and discovering the most luxurious country hotels like the Calcot & Spa. Here’s my pick of the best foodie destinations in the gorgeous Cotswolds.

The Cotswolds is a picturesque region spanning 800 miles across five counties. From idyllic villages like Kingham with honey-stone cottages to vibrant market towns like Stroud, the area is defined by its golden stone architecture and rolling hills.

There are also grand palaces and country houses to explore, as well as nature reserves and famous arboretums (Westonbirt is stunning). There are 3,000 miles of footpaths, ancient woodlands and wildflower meadows to discover, too.

But maybe the best thing about the Cotswolds’ rich cultural scene is its local food – from the creamiest cheeses to crisp organic wines, the incredible farm shops to fine-dining gastro pubs. This is the place to visit if you love trying seasonal dishes and feasting on local produce.

Beautiful food, stunning Cotswolds countryside.

Thyme, Southrop Manor

A Cotswolds countryside oasis and a must-visit for foodies.

A glorious taste of nature

Thyme couldn’t be more Cotswolds. As you turn off the main road and approach the historic estate it feels like the modern hustle no longer exists and everything slows down to a meandering walking pace. All that’s left is rolling Cotswold hills, winding gravel pathways, pretty stone cottages, botanically inspired bedrooms, The Meadow Spa and seasonal local artwork (food to us).

We ate in the nineteenth- century Ox Barn, where the picked-that-day menu changes with the gardener’s harvests, and every dish was painting-worthy. It felt almost disrespectful to devour them. We did though, obviously. Wondering what to do in the Cotswolds? Eat here.

Cotswolds comfort food at its finest.

Old Swan & Minster Mill, Minster Lovell

A hotel, spa and countryside pub hidden gem in the heart of the Cotswolds.

Traditional and delicious

The Old Swan and Minster Mill are two beautiful, quintessentially Cotswolds-esque buildings sat next to the river in picturesque Minster Lovell, nestled among an abundance of Cotswolds greenery. It’s not instantly obvious that Minster Mill has so much going on behind its pretty frontage – which makes it feel all the more like you’ve uncovered a secret gem of a hotel – including expansive lawns with croquet, tennis courts, an inviting and immaculate spa tucked away at the back and nearly 40 guest rooms (there are more than 50 combined between the hotel and the pub). Minster Mill is an oasis of calm with everything you need to slow down and unwind, and the Old Swan is something straight out of a fiction novel.

We ate at the Old Swan, tender steaks cooked to perfection with all the sides and local Hawkstone lager to drink. There’s also the Wildling Restaurant at Minster Mill – a really beautiful setting for any meal – which serves traditional, local, seasonal British food. Somewhere we plan to dine at very soon, and most likely very often.

A foodie haven.

Visit Broadway Deli and cookshops, Broadway

Take a foodie stroll along Broadway’s high street.

Beautiful Broadway

Broadway’s high street is one of the most beautiful in the Cotswolds and a foodie haven. Head to Broadway Deli – you’ll notice the TukTuk brimming with local fruit and veg – and browse everything from Italian pastries to organic wines and locally made chutneys and jams.

Then, take a trip to Broadway Cookshop before walking to Broadway Tower. The stunning views across the rolling Cotswold hills are well worth it.

One of the best fine dining restaurants in the Cotswolds.

Have dinner at The Wild Rabbit, Kingham

A passion for high quality, organic local ingredients.

Cotswolds fine dining.

One of the best fine dining restaurants in the Cotswolds, the Wild Rabbit is owned by the same family who runs the iconic Daylesford farm shop. You can feel this passion for high-quality, organic and local ingredients in the ever-changing menu. I tried the venison – served perfectly pink with cherry jus – and the grilled hispi cabbage. The summer menu is also incredible, with fresh turbot, summer salads and market rhubarb meringue.

For a special occasion, make sure to book their private dining experience in the Chicken Shed. You can also stay in one of its incredibly well-designed cottages.

Don’t leave before booking dinner at The Brasserie.

Check into the stunning Calcot & Spa, Tetbury

Based in the quaint Cotswolds town Tetbury.

Calcot Hotel & Spa

The Calcot is based in the quaint town of Tetbury, perfect for a summer getaway. Ideal for fitness and wellbeing enthusiasts, the new gym and wellness centre in the Grain Store has an incredible range of equipment and hosts personal training, pilates, and spin sessions. The café also serves deliciously healthy dishes, from smoothies to buddha bowls.

But don’t leave before booking dinner at The Brasserie. The menu celebrates seasonal finds like the strawberry and Champagne pavlova, and honey martinis. As a bonus, Stroud Farmer’s Market is nearby – held every Saturday.

Foodie paradise.

Go grocery shopping at Daylesford Farm, Daylesford

As hyper-local as it gets.

Daylesford Farm

You’ll find everything from an extensive farm shop (with a special cheese and wine store) to three dining destinations and a cookery school at this organic Cotswold farm. It’s a mecca for foodies and sells fruit and veg harvested daily from their market garden, pasture-raised meat from their farm, artisan bread from their bakery and award-winning cheese from their creamery. This is as hyper-local as it gets.

Inspired by what’s in season and growing on the organic farm.

Book a class at the Daylesford Cookery School

From firepit cooking to seasonal dinner parties.

Daylesford Cookery School

Love to cook? The classes at this iconic cookery school are inspired by what’s in season and growing on the organic farm. The cookery tutors are so friendly and courses range from firepit cooking to seasonal dinner parties. You can also learn the art of afternoon tea and whip up drinks inspired by the botanicals growing in the garden.

A reputation for the best Sunday roasts.

Tuck into a roast at The King’s Head, Bledington

An excellent base in the Cotswolds.

The King’s Head

Set on the most stunning little village green, The King’s Head is an excellent base in the Cotswolds. But, more recently, it’s developed a reputation for serving the best Sunday roasts. Book a table for the ultimate comfort food on a Sunday afternoon. They use as much local produce as possible – their Aberdeen Angus beef is from Bledington, their smoked produce is from nearby Upton Smokery and all their fresh fish is delivered daily from Cornwall.

King's Head

One of the country’s best foodie festivals.

Book tickets to Big Feastival, Kingham

In the heart of the Cotswolds.

Foodie festival

One of the country’s best foodie festivals Big Feastival is in the heart of the Cotswolds. Think Glastonbury, but with lots more delicious food, and run by Alex James (the former bassist for Blur). The chef line-up is incredible, with Raymond Blanc, Cherish Finden and Andi Oliver, plus Alex James’s Cheese Hub and plenty of BBQ fare.
