As an expat living in Thailand, I have extensively explored the country and Phuket is one of the best places for luxury resorts, wellness, cuisine and activities, offering endless things to do in Phuket and places to stay. It’s Thailand’s biggest island, made up of beautiful beaches and many different areas to see, from the vibrant Patong to the laidback Rawai in the south of the island.

Phuket remains one of Southeast Asia’s most sought-after destinations, especially during the November to April season when travellers flock to the island seeking sun, beaches, comfort and luxury. Phuket is renowned for its Patong area, yet the island offers so much more, from tranquil resorts and day trips to national parks to Michelin Guide–listed restaurants and cafés with scenic views.

During my month-long stay in Phuket, I experienced a more serene side of the island. This guide explores the relaxed Phuket, showcasing five-star resorts, award-winning restaurants, and wellness experiences rooted in Thai culture.

Phuket offers something for every kind of traveller, yet it also stands out for one of Thailand’s most distinguished luxury resort scenes, as seen in The White Lotus. Phuket is ideal for travellers seeking a balance of indulgence and culture, offering meaningful ways to experience Thai heritage alongside comfort. The island also boasts a thriving wellness scene, with world-class spas, yoga and meditation experiences, and immersive retreats designed for complete relaxation and escape. One of the highlights of Phuket is simply being outdoors, immersed in nature. With so many beaches to discover, it’s easy to feel a deep sense of calm and nurture overall wellness.

Thailand’s cuisine is renowned worldwide, and Phuket is one of the best places to experience it. With over 50 Michelin Guide restaurants, the island is a true paradise for food lovers. Alongside traditional Thai dishes, Phuket offers a variety of international flavours, including Italian, Indian and Spanish. The wellness-focused food scene is equally impressive, with fresh salads, smoothie bowls, and vibrant fruit platters available around every corner. What captivated me about Phuket was that each restaurant offered a truly distinctive experience — from fine dining surrounded by a mesmerising aquarium to an immersive seven-course tasting menu that delighted every sense.

In Phuket, you can experience the best of both worlds: luxury and culture. Spend your days exploring the island, from the charming streets of Phuket’s Old Town and its boutique shops, bustling food markets, and fascinating museums that tell the history of this area. Situated in southern Thailand, Phuket serves as the perfect gateway to a collection of nearby islands, all just a short boat ride away. Elevate your island-hopping experience with a private yacht or traditional longtail boat excursions.

Among the many options, Koh Yao, Coral Island, and the Similan Islands stand out for their serene, untouched beauty — offering crystalline waters and powder-white sands far from the crowds of more famous destinations like Phang Nga Bay.

A five-star resort secluded above Patong’s hill tops.

Avista Hideaway Patong Resort & Spa Phuket – MGallery Collection

This luxury resort is a hillside haven, offering privacy and serenity from the bustle of Phuket’s most vibrant and energetic areas.

Luxury, culture and tranquillity

Avista Hideaway Patong Resort & Spa Phuket – MGallery Collection offers a blend of luxury, culture, and tranquillity. Nestled on lush hillside grounds, the resort features 150 elegant rooms and suites, including the Hideaway Suite, which offers a private pool, multiple living areas, and an expansive terrace. What makes the property special is its thoughtful design inspired by Thailand’s Sukhothai heritage, infusing contemporary luxury with cultural storytelling.

Sitting on the rooftop of the resort are two Michelin Guide restaurants: Tambu Phuket, serving a theatrical Indian tasting menu, and Sizzle Rooftop, offering premium steaks, seafood, and innovative cocktails with panoramic views of Patong Hills and the Andaman Sea.

The resort’s tranquil ambience is enhanced by three unique swimming pools, an award-winning spa, and wellness programmes like yoga and Tai Chi. During my stay, I found the balance between privacy and exploration particularly captivating, whether relaxing in my suite’s serene sanctuary or wandering to one of the resort’s swimming pools or grand lobby.

A boutique beach resort nestled in nature.

The Sarojin

This Michelin Key–awarded resort is tucked between the Andaman Sea and lush jungle, boasting a private pearl-white sand beach that invites you to fully immerse yourself in nature’s beauty.

Timeless tradition

Located a one-hour drive from Phuket airport, The Sarojin is a hidden gem that I recommend for anyone seeking luxury, tranquillity, and a deeply personal experience in Thailand. This 56-suite boutique resort offers a rare combination of intimacy and luxury. My days began with a la carte breakfasts served until 6pm, complete with sparkling wine, smoothie bowls, fresh juice, and pastries under a canopy of trees. I stayed in a Jacuzzi Pool Suite with a four-poster bed, an outdoor rainfall shower, and a heated Jacuzzi on a private terrace, where I enjoyed the tranquil sounds of nature beneath rustling palms. Each evening, towel art and fresh flowers awaited me, a small yet meaningful gesture that epitomised the resort’s attention to detail.

From the moment I arrived at The Sarojin, it was clear that every element was crafted with care. The staff remembered my name, anticipated my preferences, and ensured my stay felt personal and effortless. Beyond this bespoke service, the resort’s commitment to conscious travel enables guests to enjoy experiences that are luxurious yet deeply meaningful – connecting them with the surrounding nature, local culture, and community.

I experienced many unforgettable moments during my stay, from candlelit dinners beside a jungle waterfall to serene mornings on the private beach, where rainbows arched across the sky with no one else in sight.

The world’s best underwater restaurant.

Su Va Na

Dine with 25,000 marine creatures surrounded by an aquarium at this unique fine dining restaurant in Phuket.

One-of-a-kind experience

This is a truly one-of-a-kind experience, and it’s only fitting that it takes place in the heart of Phuket, an island embraced by the shimmering waters of the Andaman Sea. From the moment I arrived at Su Va Na, everything was extraordinary with impeccable service, delightful food, and a mesmerising aquarium setting that transformed dining into something out of the ordinary.

The restaurant’s 13-course seasonal menu showcases the finest global produce alongside traditional Thai ingredients, each dish telling its own story. I was captivated by the truffle crème brûlée topped with caviar, which was a sublime balance of sweet and savoury – unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The Sorrel & Kefir gelato, inspired by Thai culture in Chiang Mai, combined kefir lassi foam, elderflower-compressed Granny Smith, and frozen cucumber in a composition of delicate, edible artistry. Each dish was intricately decorated, featuring pearls and Thai flowers, so delicate that it almost felt untouchable.

As the courses unfolded, elegant mermaids glided through the aquarium, performing an enchanting choreography alongside sharks and fish that made the entire evening feel like stepping into a dream. An unforgettable experience and one of the most unique things to do in Phuket.

A Michelin Guide Indian restaurant.

Tambu Phuket

Tambu Phuket offers a 7-course tasting menu that takes you on a journey through India, from street food staples to classic curry dishes presented in a unique, immersive way.

Exceptional dining experience

Located in a luxurious rooftop tent, Tambu Phuket is Avista Hideaway Patong Resort’s Michelin Guide Indian restaurant, renowned for its 7-course tasting menu cooked by “Iron Chef Thailand winner”, Saurabh Sachdeva. As soon as I arrived, the journey through India began, framed by candlelights, yellow cushions, terracotta walls and elephant paintings, while traditional Indian music softly played, transporting me to India’s Mughal era.

With Indian cuisine being a personal favourite, the anticipation was well rewarded by a dining experience that is among the most exceptional I have experienced. The journey was a theatrical performance in progressive Indian charcoal cuisine. From street-food-inspired bites like classic samosas and spiced beetroot chops, to the show-stopping Jhal Muri, prepared tableside with smoked avocado snow and crisp puffed rice, each dish was carefully choreographed through India’s regions with a historic story behind it.

The highlight of the menu was the crab kutcha, cooked to perfection with curry-spiced crab encased in smoked bread, accompanied by condiments including cucumber and mint yoghurt. The main course offered a medley of signature curries and breads, while dessert concluded with delicate miniature sweets from around the country, including saffron pistachio biscuit and dark chocolate-infused paan.

Serene settings with sweeping views of the Andaman Sea.

Summore Day Cafe

This is one of Phuket’s best cafes with different spots to take in the breathtaking views, and relax and unwind.

Serene escape

For a peaceful morning, Summore Day Café is my favourite spot in Phuket. It feels like a serene escape perched above the coast with soothing sea views. Its minimalist design and outdoor terraces create the perfect setting to unwind with a fresh smoothie or tasty brunch.

You can pick your perfect spot here, whether it’s lounging on a hilltop bean bag, finding a quiet corner in private, sinking into the viewing deck, or retreating indoors to escape the midday sun. It’s the ideal place to bring a book, journal, or headphones and ease into a slow, unhurried day. I loved sitting on the deck, letting the gentle ocean breeze brush past me, surrounded by lush greenery that lifted my spirits and reminded me of the simple joys of being outdoors.

The real star here, however, is the drinks menu. From a cold brew crowned with homemade lemon cream to a refreshing iced mint chocolate, every item on the menu was unique. The food is equally delicious, with vibrant smoothie bowls, nutritious avocado on sourdough, Thai basil rice bowls, and Mexican tacos providing a menu that’s as visually appealing as it is delicious. A must for any things to do in Phuket itinerary.

A world-renowned diving destination in the Andaman Sea.

Day trip to Similan Islands

Situated within one of Thailand’s protected national parks, the Similan Islands offer a rare, pristine beauty that is truly breathtaking.

Untouched natural beauty

A day trip to the Similan Islands is the perfect way to experience Phuket’s untouched natural beauty. This pristine National Park is famed for its crystal-clear waters, powder-white beaches, and vibrant marine life. The archipelago of 11 islands is renowned as one of the world’s top diving destinations. Travelling by luxury yacht elevates the experience, featuring spacious decks, shaded lounges, and a relaxed atmosphere that replaces the rush of speedboats, making the journey comfortable and indulgent.

The two-hour journey across the Andaman Sea was pure bliss, the sun warming my skin as I sipped a refreshing drink and let the scenery unfold. Arriving at the first island, I was greeted by pearl-like beaches, turquoise waters, and striking rock formations that seemed almost unreal. I hiked to the viewpoint, where the panorama took my breath away, then cooled off with a swim in the crystalline sea. This is undoubtedly one of the most stunning beaches I have ever set eyes on, even after years of exploring the shores of Southeast Asia and Australia.

An award-winning spa surrounded by scenic beauty.

Jivana Spa

Step into a serene sanctuary at Jivana Spa, experience soothing massage treatments including deep tissue, aromatherpay and traditional Thai.

Oasis of calm

No trip to Phuket feels complete without a Thai massage, but I quickly learned to skip the bustling parlours of the main streets and instead retreat to Jivana Spa at Avista Hideaway Patong. The moment I stepped inside, the energy of Patong melted away, replaced by an oasis of calm where lush greenery and the gentle trickle of water set the tone for total relaxation.

Every corner of Jivana Spa feels like a hidden sanctuary. Outdoor massage beds float above lily-covered ponds, while intimate treatment rooms invite peaceful indulgence. I experienced an aromatherapy massage, and it was pure bliss – every knot and tension in my body melted away as soothing scents of essential oils filled the air. It’s the perfect place to slow down, restore your body and cocoon in tranquillity and natural beauty.

The charming, vibrant and historic heart of Phuket.

Phuket Old Town

Explore boutique stores, vibrant Sino-Portuguese architecture, murals and shrines, the old walking street and some of Phuket’s most delicious cuisine.

Vibrant architecture

For a striking contrast to Phuket’s sun-drenched beaches, I wandered through the island’s Old Town, where history, culture, and elegance intertwine on every street. The vibrant architecture tells the story of a rich past, shaped by Sino-Portuguese heritage with the influence of Portuguese and Dutch colonial powers. In the 1800s, the booming tin mining industry brought workers from across the globe, creating a unique tapestry of cultures that still resonates today in the medley of cuisines, religions, and architectural styles.

Walking the Old Town streets, I felt transported in time. The Sunday walking street comes alive with Phuket’s celebrated cuisine – street food so good it’s earned the UNESCO’s “City of Gastronomy” title. I discovered rooftop bars with live music and the recently opened Baba Mansion, a sage-green heritage house from World War I, where I savoured Malaysia’s renowned nasi lemak amid quirky, history-filled décor. Boutique shops, ice cream parlours, and handcrafted jewellery lined the charming, kaleidoscopic streets.

A collection of Phuket’s most tranquil shores.

Beach hopping

From lively beachfronts to quieter coves, each beach in Phuket offers soft sands, clear waters, natural beauty and slow moments.

Beautiful beaches

Phuket is blessed with an abundance of beautiful beaches, each with its own character and mood. I found Nai Harn Beach, in the south of the island, to be one of the most effortlessly charming. Set in a quieter pocket of Phuket, it has a laid-back atmosphere with soft sand, calm waters, and just a handful of beach bars and restaurants that make it feel intimate rather than overdeveloped.

Freedom Beach, however, stole my heart. Reached by a scenic walk in the early morning, it offers a rare sense of seclusion that feels worlds away from the buzz of Patong. As I descended the path, turquoise waters and powder-soft sand revealed themselves like a secret waiting to be discovered. I spent hours swimming, sun-soaked, or tucked beneath palm trees with a book, accompanied only by the sound of the sea. Simple stalls on the sand serve fresh coconuts and Thai dishes, while Barefoot Bistro Bar at the southern end offers shaded seating and uninterrupted views.

Yanui Beach is smaller and less known, framed by rocky outcrops and bathed in golden light at sunset. It became my favourite spot for quiet evening picnics and morning walks.
