Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, a secluded luxury retreat in Jalisco’s Costalegre region, has expanded its wellness programme with guided movement, recovery sessions and ceremonies inspired by Mexican traditions.

Announced on 18 August, the programme is designed for a broad mix of guests, from runners maintaining an endurance routine to couples seeking a private spa evening. Its central additions include the Flow & Restore Detox, the Cold Collective and seasonal beachfront ceremonies led by resident shamans.

The experiences unfold across the resort’s 3,000-acre reserve along Mexico’s Pacific coast, where tropical forest meets dramatic cliffs and quiet stretches of shoreline. The programme uses the reserve for runs and beachfront rituals, while locally sourced copal features throughout the Spa.

“With each new experience being introduced, the intention is to honour the ancestral traditions of Mexico while creating space for guests to restore both body and mind,” Javier Fernandez, Spa & Wellness Director at Four Seasons Tamarindo, said in the announcement.

Flow & Restore Detox combines yoga with temazcal

The new Flow & Restore Detox guides guests through pranayama yoga and intentional breathing before moving into an organic ritual to cleanse the skin and a traditional temazcal ceremony led by a shaman.

Four Seasons has arranged the yoga and spa treatments as one continuous ritual rather than as separate appointments. Guests move from controlled breathing and mindful movement into skin cleansing before entering the heat and steam of the temazcal.

The resort presents the session as a way to support physical and emotional renewal while encouraging balance and mental clarity. Its cultural centrepiece is the temazcal, a pre-Hispanic practice whose name derives from a Nahuatl term meaning “house of heat”.

The ceremony centres on heat, steam and guided intention. Although the Flow & Restore Detox incorporates it into a broader sequence, guests can also book the resort’s dedicated Temazcal Ceremony as a separate experience.

The Cold Collective turns the reserve into a running route

The Cold Collective offers the most active of the new experiences, beginning with a guided 6.2-mile, or 10-kilometre, morning run through the protected reserve.

After returning to the Spa, participants work through recovery-focused stretches and guided breathing before finishing with cold-water immersion. Four Seasons says the format is designed to support recovery, improve concentration and assist with nervous-system regulation.

The running distance can be adjusted according to each guest’s ability or training plan. That flexibility makes the session suitable for experienced runners preparing for an event as well as outdoor enthusiasts who want an energetic start without committing to the full route.

Tamarindo already offered an extensive movement programme before introducing the Cold Collective. Existing activities include reserve hikes, yoga, Pilates, tennis, pickleball and private fitness training, supported by a 6,000-square-foot Fitness Center spanning indoor and outdoor spaces and designed by celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak.

The new running experience gives that programme a stronger recovery component. Its sequence also allows guests to encounter the forest and coastline before moving into the Spa’s quieter spaces.

Beachfront ceremonies mark personal occasions

Four Seasons has also added seasonal shamanic ceremonies to its wellness calendar, with personalised rituals held on the beachfront and guided by resident shamans.

Each ceremony can be tailored for an individual or group, whether guests are marking a milestone, celebrating an occasion or setting aside time for reflection. The ceremonies take place beside the waves, within the surrounding reserve.

These ceremonies draw on ancestral Mexican traditions while responding to a guest’s stated intention. Four Seasons has not set out a single fixed format, allowing the details to vary between occasions and seasonal programmes.

Recovery treatments extend the spa programme

Alongside its guided initiatives, the Spa at Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo is highlighting treatments focused on muscular recovery and private relaxation.

The Ocean Inspired Recovery Massage uses deep-pressure techniques to address muscular tension and fatigue, followed by long strokes intended to encourage circulation and lymphatic flow. Assisted stretching focuses on mobility, while an anti-inflammatory balm completes the treatment for guests recovering from travel or physical activity.

For couples, Spa Under the Stars turns the wellness area into a private evening retreat. The experience includes a personalised 90-minute couples’ massage, exclusive access to the Spa, use of the steam room and relaxation pool, and wine with charcuterie beneath the night sky.

The standalone Temazcal Ceremony remains available for guests who want to focus entirely on the traditional heat ritual. Led by a shaman, the session uses steam and guided intention to create space for purification and reflection.

Copal provides a further connection between the Spa and its setting. The aromatic resin comes from trees native to the reserve and has a longstanding place in Mexican ceremonial traditions. The resin is used throughout the wellness spaces and in the resort’s Signature Copal Body Treatment.

Inside the Spa at Four Seasons Tamarindo

Located within the Pacific coast resort, the Spa contains eight treatment cabins, each with an open-air shower. Relaxation areas include an indoor quiet room, a red-clay Zen garden, a plunge pool and loungers.

Hotel guests receive complimentary access to the wellness facilities during operating hours. These include steam rooms, saunas, a whirlpool, plunge pools and dedicated relaxation areas. The Spa is open daily from 9am to 7pm.

Guests aged 14 and older may receive massages and use the facilities provided they have the required consent and adult supervision. The Spa and fitness facilities are unavailable to those younger than 14 unless an adult is supervising them.

Beyond formal treatments, Tamarindo’s established wellness programme uses other parts of the property. Rancho Lola, a 35-acre working farm, hosts activities such as planting native trees, gathering seasonal ingredients and foraging with the resort’s chefs. A Nature Walk & Beach Picnic combines a guided walk with a chef-prepared breakfast inside the reserve.

Golfers can book the Quirogolf Massage, which uses a warmed golf ball to target tired muscles after time on the resort’s 18-hole El Tamarindo Golf Course. These experiences remain available alongside the new running and ceremonial programme.

Planning a wellness stay in Costalegre

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo opened in November 2022 on a secluded peninsula between La Manzanilla and Barra de Navidad. The property has 157 rooms, including 63 suites, and the resort says only 2 per cent of its 1,214-hectare reserve is intended for development.

Manzanillo-Costalegre International Airport is about 35 minutes from the reserve’s main gate. An alternative transfer from Puerto Vallarta combines a 25-minute private flight with a drive of about 55 minutes.

The variable-distance Cold Collective is the most adaptable choice for active travellers, while Flow & Restore offers the fullest combination of movement and traditional ceremony. Couples seeking privacy can reserve Spa Under the Stars directly through the resort, with seasonal ceremonies arranged around the timing and purpose of each stay.
