Dunia Baru, a 51-metre Indonesian phinisi superyacht, has secured commercial permission to operate in Palau, with its first private voyages scheduled for December 2026.
The yacht is the first Indonesian phinisi permitted to operate commercially in Palauan waters. Its inaugural season will run until February 2027, offering bespoke charters of at least seven nights for up to 14 guests.
Set across one of the Pacific’s most protected archipelagos, the itineraries will combine secluded rock islands and turquoise lagoons with diving at coral gardens and manta ray cleaning stations. Conditions during these months typically include calm seas, clear skies and underwater visibility of up to 40 metres.
Palau voyages timed around lunar spawning
Dunia Baru’s Palau season has been arranged around lunar-linked spawning events, which are among the archipelago’s key diving experiences.
At the full moon, bohar snapper gather in their thousands along reef edges at dawn before rising into large underwater formations. During the new moon, bumphead parrotfish come together for synchronised spawning, with the audible sounds of males butting heads during courtship.
Guests will be able to observe the gatherings from Dunia Baru’s tender or join guided dives at carefully selected sites. Currents, tides and fish behaviour can influence the location and timing of each event, while some snapper dives may require advanced experience.
The crew of 18 includes dive instructors and expedition guides, alongside spa therapists for quieter hours on board. Snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and private beach picnics can also be incorporated into each itinerary.
“Bringing Dunia Baru to Palau has been over a year in the making,” Dunia Baru owner Teng Wee said. “We spent many months working closely with the Palau government to ensure this project aligned with the country’s environmental standards and tourism vision.”
Indonesian craftsmanship aboard Dunia Baru
Meaning “New World” in Indonesian, Dunia Baru draws on the traditional phinisi sailing vessels associated with South Sulawesi. UNESCO recognises pinisi boatbuilding as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.
Konjo Boat Builders constructed the yacht over eight years, working primarily with durable Indonesian Ulin ironwood and following skills passed through generations. Three of the original carpenters remain part of Dunia Baru’s crew.
Seven en-suite cabins are joined by open-plan living areas and wraparound teak decks overlooking the water. A private chef creates personalised menus centred on Indonesian cuisine, with each charter reserved exclusively for one group.
Palau journeys aboard Dunia Baru start from US$30,000 plus GST per night on an all-inclusive basis, with a minimum stay of seven nights. Reservations are available through the Dunia Baru website.
