Douro Palace Hotel & Spa has launched a programme of guided farm walks and wine experiences at its four-star property in Portugal’s Douro Valley. Announced on 28 September 2026, it also gives guests new ways to explore the region by boat or train.
The 60-room hotel is in Santa Cruz do Douro, Baião, a short drive from Porto. Vineyard views provide the setting for a stay that can be spent largely on the estate, with food from its organic farm, time at the spa and wine tastings. The new excursions offer a different sort of day, taking guests to the Douro River or along the Douro Line towards Pinhão.
Walk the organic farm with D. Maria
The most personal addition to the hotel’s experiences is Discovering the Quinta with D. Maria. It is a guided walk through the estate’s organic farm, led by D. Maria, the hotel’s resident gardener. A quinta is a Portuguese estate, and this one has a direct connection to dinner: Eça Restaurant uses produce grown on the property.
Starting on the farm gives guests a chance to see that connection before sitting down to eat. D. Maria looks after the grounds herself, so the walk is led by the person who works with them, rather than a guide brought in for an excursion. The hotel has also introduced outdoor estate picnics for guests who would like to spend more time outside.
Together, the walk and picnic offer an appealingly unhurried way to use a day at the hotel. Guests planning their stay around either activity should confirm available times with the property, especially if they also want to fit in a tasting or a spa appointment.
Wine tastings, cured meats and poetry
Guided wine tastings are another part of the new programme, with sessions lasting 45 minutes. Guests can also choose regional wine-and-cheese pairings. Aromas da Lenha focuses on traditional Portuguese cured meats, giving food lovers another route into the region’s flavours without leaving the estate.
The most unusual option is Poetry and Wine, which brings recited verse into a wine tasting. “Carefully selected verses will be recited while participants taste wine,” the hotel says in its description of the activity. The session takes around 45 minutes. It sounds like a pleasant choice for anyone who wants to sit with a glass for a while rather than move straight from one tasting note to the next.
There are useful details for planning a short stay on the hotel’s additional-services page. It currently lists a wine tasting at €20 per person on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 5pm. A separately listed charcuterie-and-wine tasting costs €22 per person, with sessions on Wednesdays at 4pm and Fridays at 5pm. If Aromas da Lenha is the experience you have in mind, ask the hotel about its availability when booking; the priced listing uses a different name.
Those fixed tasting times are worth checking before choosing a day out in the valley. An excursion that lasts into the afternoon may leave little time to return for a 5pm session, whereas a day spent on the estate leaves more room to decide whether wine comes before or with dinner.
Dinner at Eça Restaurant
Eça Restaurant serves regional cuisine using produce from the hotel’s farm alongside local, seasonal ingredients. The hotel highlights Douro pike among its dishes. Its announcement also points to roast octopus with oven-baked rice, while vegetable moqueca offers another choice.
The hotel recommends traditional alheira, a sausage associated with nearby Baião. Another suggestion is Transmontano-style couscous served with smoked meats from the region. Douro and Port wines are available to pair with the food, making dinner an easy continuation of a day spent getting to know the estate. As the kitchen draws on seasonal produce, it is worth checking the current menu if a particular dish has caught your eye.
The restaurant takes its name from Portuguese author Eça de Queiroz. The hotel connects him with nearby Casa de Tormes and The City and the Mountains, a work it says was inspired by the region. That literary thread now runs through the new poetry-and-wine activity too, though the restaurant’s most immediate link to the valley is what arrives on the plate.
Grape-based treatments at the Palace Spa
At the Palace Spa, the hotel’s Vinotherapy Ritual takes its cue from another Douro ingredient: grapes. The treatment features an exfoliation using grapes, a wrap with antioxidants, a wine-based massage and facial care. It is the spa booking that most clearly picks up the wine theme running through the rest of the stay.
The wellness facilities also include thermal suites and relaxation areas. There is an indoor pool with a waterfall, along with a sauna and a Turkish bath. For guests spending a full day at the hotel, the spa offers a gentler pace between the farm and dinner. Anyone set on the Vinotherapy Ritual should ask about appointment times before arranging the rest of the day around it.
A two-night stay with a Douro boat trip
The hotel’s *O Douro Vê-se Daqui* offer combines a two-night stay with a trip on the Douro River. Guests board and disembark at the Pala pier in Ribadouro. They arrange their own transport between the hotel and the pier, a detail to allow for when planning the two days.
There is also a separately bookable Douro Verde boat trip for guests who want a shorter river outing. The hotel currently lists this as a one-hour journey costing €30 per person, with daily departures at 11am from the Pala pier. Booking is required at least 12 hours ahead, and guests arrange their own travel to and from the departure point.
The two choices suit different plans. The hotel’s two-night offer builds a river trip into the stay, while the standalone sailing lets guests arrange an outing alongside other activities. Check the details of the offer when reserving rather than assuming the separately listed one-hour trip is the journey included in the package.
The 4 Moments train trip to Pinhão
Guests who want to spend a full day beyond the hotel can choose the 4 Moments Train experience, listed on the hotel’s website as 4 Moments in the Douro. It pairs a journey on the Douro Line with a visit and wine tasting at Quinta do Bomfim. The current listing gives a price of €120 per person and sets out a schedule that also includes lunch and a boat trip.
The day begins with a 10.50am train from Aregos to Pinhão, a journey the hotel lists at 55 minutes. Lunch follows at Cais da Foz Restaurant. The visit and tasting at Quinta do Bomfim is scheduled for 2.30pm, before a 4.30pm boat trip. The return train is listed to leave Pinhão at 6.11pm for the original station.
It is a fuller day than a tasting or boat trip booked on its own, and the lunch stop takes place away from Eça Restaurant. Guests arrange their own transport between the programme locations. The hotel says the Quinta do Bomfim visit time can change with availability, and lunch may move to a restaurant of equivalent category; other parts of the programme may also change depending on its partners. Confirm the itinerary and transfer arrangements when booking, particularly if you are planning dinner back at the hotel.
