Seeking: Unique boutique luxury
Highlight: Rooms come with access to Butler service
Who knew that behind such an unassuming facade, lay one of Edinburgh’s most unique cocktail bars and boutique hotels. The House of Gods, Edinburgh hotel is extraordinary. Upon entering, you are immediately transported to a hedonistic, dimly lit, velvet dressed bar where the rules go out the window. Walking in I was struck by the huge glittery disco ball hanging high and the Christmas decs already present on the bar.
Hidden at the back of the bar, there is a cubby hole for reception and a door, which only residents can enter leading to 22 curated rooms inspired by the luxurious Orient Express or Versailles. I was greeted with a smile and a glass of bubbles at check in which is always a good start to any hotel stay! This luxury hotel has its own branded prosecco which during your stay, you become very acquainted with especially if you opt for one of the VIP packages with your room. I tried and tested the aptly named ‘Treat me like I’m famous’ package for my 24 hour stay and I was lavished with treats, booze and a butler! There is no doubt that House of Gods is unique. The overall vibe is to be frivolous and forget the outside world and all its rules. It is like no other hotel I have ever stayed in and makes for an even more memorable experience during your trip to Edinburgh. You can live like a rock star for the duration of your stay and spoil yourself in this adult only hotel.

Best cocktails
1. House of Gods No.5
This was my first tipple that arrived in a perfume bottle with a House of Gods No. 5 label. It pays homage to fashion royalty Mademoiselle Coco herself and is a clever mixture of ginger infused gin, pomegranate liqueur, hibiscus syrup, citrus and Peychauds Bitters and when all mixed together it is nearly the exact same colour as the well-known scent!
2. Bohemian Gold
This was my go-to as it is a champagne based cocktail. Other ingredients are Tanqueray Gin, Acqua di Cedro, honey and citrus and this one is served with a cute, branded ribbon around the glass.
3. Billionaires Girls Club
This concoction celebrates living your best life. It’s a slightly a stronger drink made up of Hennessy Cognac, Apple Syrup, Oloroso Sherry and Peychauds Bitters. A pure pleasure to down (I mean sip!).
Stay
Now when I say room, I mean cabin. I stayed in one of the distinctive cabins which was designed to impersonate the Orient Express. Yes, the cabin is a modest room but it is an unforgettable experience on offer here. The space is compact but furnished with everything you need, with lots of the amenities hidden in drawers or behind mirrored cupboards or frames. Through the dark corridors, there are hidden doors to each room (which after a few hours of cocktail drinking I had to make sure I remembered how to navigate my way back), waiting for VIPs to enter. I was greeted with a bed covered in gold balloons, a bottle of prosecco on ice and a box of chocolates to devour while I settled in. I was already a glass down on the bubbles so I immediately cracked the bottle open! The room is just as decadent as the entrance and captivates you with red covers and curtains surrounding the bed, plush leopard print cushions and a completely marble tiled bathroom (like a very small wet room) and more animal lamps. Note that there is no real window in the Cabin but that’s part of the fantasy as it makes you feel as if you are travelling in one the carriages on the notorious train.
For those who like things on a grander scale, there are the classic rooms available with more space featuring four poster beds and a larger bathroom. These rooms are inspired by Versailles and for the ultimate treat, there is a suite at the property with a cooper bath as the focal point along with a ginormous bed fit for any rockstar royalty!
Explore
The flamboyant House of Gods, Edinburgh hotel is based in Cowgate, Edinburgh’s second oldest street, which really makes it a great base for exploring the city. The castle is close by and this location makes it easy to mooch around and easily take in all the other popular city attractions and landmarks.
Being part of Edinburgh’s old town, Cowgate is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares (and now a great shortcut) which leads down nicely into Grassmarket, a livelier area filled with shops and restaurants, also known for its colour stretch of shops which I am sure you have seen in many an Instagram post. With the success of the original House of Gods, they have now opened in Glasgow which follows the same quirks and values. Added bonus for the new opening is the Sacred Garden roof terrace which is already proving as popular. Again, the hotel has been styled in the same maximalist way and features 28 rooms and suites.
Relax
The butler button is one of the highlights for me. Not only can you order more drinks or anything else you may fancy, after 9pm (and after plenty of drinks), you can have milk and cookies delivered to your room. The genius behind this needs a medal as along with the cookies, comes sweeties and popcorn making midnight snacks readily available to be devoured in your boudoir. You can order as many as you like (I did only take advantage of this once) but the butler service is speedy and no ask is too big.
The VIP packages are a great addition for your stay and also include a bespoke cocktail called Millionaire which is made in your room for you to enjoy at your own leisure. There is a smart tv concealed in the mirror for prime in bed viewing while you enjoy your snacks and it is already linked up with all the apps for guests to enjoy, none of that 8 step verification faff for Netflix when you log into a different tv! Breakfast is delivered to your room in a cute basket by the team at your preferred time, along with two mimosas (as part of the VIP package). It’s the most basic part of the whole experience but still with the House of Gods twist! I always enjoy eating breakfast in bed and the fact that it is encouraged here is just another bonus especially when it comes with more alcohol!

Luxurious treehouse accommodation, moreish comfort food, cosy bar fires and nowhere else to be. Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa, a 5 star Relais & Chateaux hotel bordering the otherworldly New Forest in England, took us off grid for a few days and nestled us among the trees. There’s something almost dreamlike about Minos Beach Art Hotel. From the moment we stepped onto the whitewashed pathway leading to our villa, the sea glinting just a few metres away, we knew we’d found the perfect place for our babymoon.
